by Allan Matiya

The eleven times Zambia Super League Champions Nkana yesterday defeated City of Lusaka Football club in an exciting game played at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka, boosting their hopes of retaining their Super League Supremacy.

Nkana went a goal up in the 18th minute through Morgan Kapembwa, after taking advantage of a defensive error by Francis Lusambo. William Chinse’s first attempt to score went past City’s goal keeper Sidney Tembo before coming to Kapembwa who finished it off without much effort.

The visitors, who seemed to be settled from the start to the end of the match, and exerted pressure on the City defence and restricted them into their own half.

Tumelo Chibwe had the first attempt on goal in the 6th minute firing a shot over the cross bar after a good run as Nkana continued to take control of the match. Allan mukuka made frequent attacks from the right.

Speed winger Mazuba Mkandawire had his shot saved by the Nkana goal minder with just 10 minutes of play.

Nkana almost broke the deadlock in the 11th minute after International midfielder Ian Bakala lost possession of the ball to an opponent, Evans Mukosi came to the rescue to clear the ball out of danger.

City threw away good chances through Mkandawire, Brian Lubaba, Sipho Mumbi and Tonny Mukwasa to level the scores just before half-time. Lubaba marshaled the midfield for the home team and played as the steam engine. On the other hand Nkana had also wasted a number of good scoring chances.

David Siame had a clear chance in the 14th minute from his effort from close range was blocked by the keeper and failed to convert from a rebound.

Mukwasa also had a good chance to put City back into the game on level terms in the 28th minute from a rebound from Bakala’s well taken free kick.

Nkana were leading by 1-0 at half-time.

A great opportunity for an equalizer came as early as the 4th minute of the second half when Mukwasa’s header from Lubaba’s corner came off the cross bar.

In search for goals Derrick Mulenga was brought in for Siame in the 53rd minute strengthen the striking force. Kennedy Chola was also introduced on the pitch to replace Bakala who played below expectations.

George Njobvu had a scoring opportunity after a good run from Mukuka on the right but had his effort going wide. In the 78th minute Nkana rested their captain William Chinse for Mike Mudenda.

Kapembwa had an opportunity to double advantage for Nkana four minutes before regulation time, but his weak shot was easily palmed by Tembo.

Nkana have are now on four points from from their two league games after 0-0 draw against Lusaka Dynamos in their opening match.

Cosafa Cup will be staged this year

Cosafa president Suketu Patel has given the assurance that the regional Cup tournament will go ahead this year despite the withdrawal of Castle as their main sponsors.

SA Breweries withdrew from the Cosafa Cup last year.

Patel, who is presently in South Africa, tells KickOff.com that his main agenda in visiting Johannesburg is connection with securing sponsorship for this year's competition.

“There is great interest from companies but I can’t reveal their names at this stage. I am hopeful that within 10 days we will have finalised new sponsorship for the tournament.”

Patel also hinted that there is a possibility of a change of format for this year’s Cosafa tournament and also that the date for the start of the tournament be shifted from May to later this year.

“There are a number of tournaments to be played this year and this can also cause us to change the format and the date of this year’s event,” he said.
