Former Chipolopolo star, Chalwe nets a hat trick

Former Zambia international striker, Linos Chalwe netted a hat trick for Bay United on Saturday in the South African first division (Mvela Golden league).

Chalwe who joined Bay United in January 2008 partnered another Zambian, former National Assembly and under-23 striker Given Singuluma in attack but it was a veteran who came out top.

The former Green Buffaloes striker hit a hat trick to help Bay United to a 4-0 win against Ikapa Spoting and the destiny for promotion is in their hands after topping the National First Division , Coastal stream ahead by one point with two games to go.

Chalwe was part of the Chipolopolo squad that played at the Egypt 2006 African Cup of Nations. His two young brothers, Songwe and Sashi ply their trade also in South Africa with Moroka Swallows and FC AK respectively.

The Chalwe brothers have all represented Zambia at international level but they have never been in one Chipolopolo team.

The winners of the Inland and Coastal streams play against each other in a Final at the end of the season – with the victor of which will be promoted to the PSL.

The loser of the Final will play in the play-offs against the two second-placed teams in each stream and the 15th-placed team on the ABSA Premiership table.

South Africa-PSL

Last week, most South African Premier Soccer League, PSL sides were involved in the Nedbank Cup against lower division opposition. Most of the PSL first team players were rested. But over the weekend, the PSL matches resumed unfortunately no Zambian was on score board.

Supersport 6-1 Free State Stars

Kennedy Mweene (pictured) was dropped to the bench by Malawian born coach Kinah Phiri but the Free State Stars coach should be cursing his decision afterwards. The PSL surprise package conceded 6 goals to allow Supersport to go top with 44 points.

Free State Stars are now placed fifth with 35 points. Mweene’s international teammate Chintu Kampamba also did not feature for Stars.

Jomo Cosmos 0-0 Moraka Swallows

James Chamanga failed to add to his 13 league goals tally after Moroka Swallows played to a goalless draw against Jomo Sono’s ‘Enzenkosi.’

‘Chama Boy’ completed the full game but Songwe Chalwe continued missing from the Swallows strike force.

Another Zambian and former under-20 striker Davies Mwape was also not part of Jomo Cosmos squad. The burly striker has failed to impress Sono after being highly regarded earlier on by the former Orlando Pirates number 10.

The Dube birds are placed seventh with 33 points while Cosmos are still in the relegation drop zone with 19 points after 23 games.

Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 Amazulu

Chipolopolo second choice goal keeper Kalililo Kakonje(pictured) conceded a goal in a match against Kaizer Chiefs. The Clive Barker tutored Amazulu are 12th on a 16 team log table with 27 points while glamour side, Amakhosi are 9th with 30 points.

Golden Arrows 2-2 BidVest Wits

After an impressive display in midweek, Noah Chivuta (capped twice at international level), failed to increase his goal tally. The former under-23 skipper has scored six league goals for Wits from midfield all coming in the first half (before Christmas) of the PSL season.

Hard tackler Billy Mwanza is out of favour with the coach at Arrows while Joseph Musonda has continued his fine form.

Tunisia-Fwayo makes his Etoile debut
2007 African Youth Cup top scorer with five goals Fwayo Tembo played his first official game for Etoile Sportive du Sahel against AS Douane (Senegal) in the CAF Champions League second round.
The former Edusport Youth player was introduced in the last 20 minutes and he showed a few flashes of his tricks much to delight of the Etoile fans.
Etoile are the CAF Champions League defending Champions and started their defence for the title with a 5-0 walloping over Senegal’s AS Doune despite missing influential playmaker Amine Chermiti (voted best player in Africa in 2007.

Turkey- Mbesuma out of favour and not rated
Collins Mbesuma’s Porthmouth ghost has accompanied him to Bursaspor. Mbesuma is currently not in the plans of Bursaspor coach. The former ‘Amakhosi’ hit man last featured for Bursaspor in November 2007 and despite recovering from an injury that ruled him out of the Afcon, the new coach at Bursaspor doesn’t rate him.
Bursaspor a promoted team last season to the Turkish Supercell lost 1-0 to Gaziantespor but Bursaspor are safe from relegation in 12th placed from an 18 team log.

Finland-RoPS fire coach
Zambian contingent at Finnish top division side RoPS are without a coach after Tom Saintfiet was fired on Friday by management at the club after just being two months in-charge.

RoPS have been performing poorly in the Finnish league cup. The Finnish top division kicks off on 30th April 2008. RoPS got promoted last season from the second division thanks to Zambian striker Nchimunya Mweetwa’s 17 goals in 25 games.

Mweetwa’s strike partner, 1994 African Cup of Nations Silver medalists Zeddy Saileti,39 popped in with a few goals. Chileshe Chibwe, Chanda Mwaba and former Power Dynamos defender Stephen Kunda are the other Zambians on the books of RoPS.

Germany- Bundesliga-2.
On Friday, Moses Sichone scored his second header in March for his club, Kickers Offenbach (see Sichone scores again). The former Nchanga Rangers player has so far made 13 appearances after having an injury plagued first half of the campaign(made 5 appearance) but ‘Big Mo’ has been an ever present figure in the heart of the Offenbach defence in the second half of the season.

Sichone’s former teammate at Nchanga and Cologne(Germany), Andrew Sinkala is still out as he is recovering from tuberculosis(TB) but his club SC Paderborn are battling for their lives and it now seems, they will be relegated.

Denmark
Chris Katongo – The Staff Sergeant started up front for struggling Danish side Brondby IF as they were defeated 1-0 by FC Nordsjælland.

Katongo:we should have won

I thought we played a good game today. FC Nordsjlland did not produce many chances, but we had many. After the match Chris Katongo said "If you count the total amount of chances from each team we should have won."- "We played some of the best football we have played all year, so it's a shame that FC Nordsjlland ends up winning the game. Despite the defeat today, I still feel that we're on the right track with this team", added the sympathetic player from Zambia.

"For my game it wasn't significant that Duncan was substituted in the beginning of the game. I continued to fight hard for the balls that I did get. In the end of the game we had four men on top, and yet we still couldn't put the ball in the back of the net."- "I don't think it's a problem for me that I have yet to score in the spring season. We work hard for each other on the team, and at the end of the day it matters less to me who ends up scoring", Katongo said.

France
Felix Katongo
– Little brother Felix earned his first call-up to the Rennes senior squad but failed to make an appearance in their 3-1 home victory over Lens

Jacob Mulenga – Kitwe’s favourite target man was used as a sub for 10-men Strasbourg as they were defeated 1-0 at home to Lille. In his 22 minutes of play, Mulenga was unable to sustain any sort of attack as Strasbourg hover above the relegation zone in France’s Ligue 1.

Sweden
Isaac Chansa(pictured) – Was a second half sub for Helsingborgs IF pre-season defeat against Rodgers Kola’s former side Hamkam of Norway, as they fell 1-0. He did not figure in either the scoresheet nor the referees book.

Finland-second division
Dominic Yobe – Started, and played an integral part in Finnish side AC Oulu’s 2-1 pre-season victory over FC OPA. Yobe set-up a goal, and had numerous attempts on net. The Finnish second division season begins next month.
