Continuity vital - Mulonga

OUT-GOING Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Teddy Mulonga says there is need for continuity if the standard of the sport was to improve.

Speaking at the Press Freedom Committee Forum at Lusaka Play House last evening, Mulonga said there was no need to elect a new president because the development of the game would be affected.

He said Zambia has lagged behind because of unnecessary changes to administrations.

“We are the only country in Africa which has had several FAZ presidents in the past and if anything, we hold the world record in this area,” Mulonga said.

He said he was offering continuity because the majority of the stakeholders have requested him to continue offering service to the game.

“I am proud of the success we have achieved in the last four years but it is sad that people want to concentrate on the failures,” he said.

Mulonga is being challenged by his deputy Kalusha Bwalya and renowned football administrator Hanif Adams.

Adams, who was invited, did not turn up for the meeting.

Simataa Simataa, who is vying for vice-presidency, said he would promote youth football if elected this Saturday.

FAZ treasurer Rix Mweemba, who is re-contesting the position, said he was the best man for the position because he had demonstrated good leadership qualities by producing audited books of accounts at every FAZ council meeting.

Out-going FAZ committee member Joseph Nkole, who is running for the vice-presidency, said he was contesting the position because he had seen a vacuum-Daily Mail

Vote me, Simataa - Adams
FOOTBALL Association of Zambia (FAZ) presidential candidate Hanif Adams has urged councillors to vote for him and vice-presidential candidate Simata Simataa at next Saturday’s annual general meeting set for Lusaka’s Mulungushi International Conference Centre.

Adams and out-going FAZ vice-president Kalusha Bwalya are challenging incumbent president Teddy Mulonga for the top job.

Speaking when he addressed Mazabuka and Monze clubs on Thursday, Adams said he would work with Simataa because of his vast experience and knowledge in local and international football.

He said him and Simataa could form the best team if elected for the top two positions on March 29.

He also named Martin Simwaka, Henry Sichembe, Stafford Kayame and David Zimba as committee members he would like to work with because of their good administrative skills.

On the position of treasurer, Adams, said he would not have problems to see either Frank Munthali or Rix Mweemba scooping the position.

“I want to work with people who think like me when it comes to football administration. People who really want to develop soccer in this country and I believe the ones I have mentioned have genuine passion for the game,” Adams said.

The clubs that attended the meeting include Nakambala Leopards, Flying Eagles, Mazabuka United, Kaleya Real Bombers, Irish Ndeke, Monze United, Savory United, Lima Stars, and New Monze Swallows.

Adams, who had been running Lusaka Dynamos for 29 years, said he had great vision for Zambian football and that he wanted to transform FAZ.

He said FAZ needed to be self-sustaining instead of looking up to Government all the time.

“FAZ must become a money spinning machine where all clubs can find assistance regardless of which division they are in. This is not the case now, FAZ is ripping from clubs,” he said.

Adams said there was need for club officials to use the money from the Supersport sponsorship to improve the standard of their respective grounds and stadiums as well as buy boots and jerseys for their players rather than paying allowances.

And Flying Eagles official James Mpooma described Adams’ vision for Zambian football as good and congratulated him for taking up the challenge to stand for the position.

Meanwhile, ROBINSON KUNDA reports from Mongu that Western Province delegates to next Saturday’s meeting risk missing because they have not paid their membership fees.

Western Province Amateur Football Association (WPEFA) secretary Isikanda Mwauluka and Brave Police secretary Stephen Muchimba confirmed in separate interviews yesterday that all the nine FAZ affiliated clubs have not yet paid their membership fees to the association.

Mwauluka said clubs raised the money to pay to FAZ a long time ago but were waiting for an official from FAZ to travel to the area and carry out the registration process.

“The problem is communication breakdown between ourselves and FAZ,” he said.

Mwauluka expressed hope that the affiliation fees would be paid before next Saturday.

And Muchimba added that players from all the clubs have not been registered with FAZ, hence the Division Three league not starting.
