FAZ Elections on, Kalu hot favourite

Football councillors from around the country have gathered at Lusaka’s Mulungushi international conference for the FAZ annual general meeting were they are voting for the new FAZ executive.

The AGM started with speech from the incumbent FAZ President, Teddy Mulonga. Mulonga addressed the councillors and highlighted the achievements of his executive citing the inclusion of teams like Nakambala Leopards and Green Eagles in the Premier league as opposed to the tradition were only teams from the Copperbelt and Midlands.

Mulonga also appealed to the councillors to observe the rules. His rival for the top job, soccer icon and hot favourite to win, Kalusha Bwalya did not address.

The only notable thing that the1988 African Player of the Year has been occupied is busy posing for autobiographs as delegates have been asking to take photos with African legend.

At the moment the councillors are voting. The final results are expected to be out around 19:00 hours Zambian time.

The FAZ elections are being covered by the Zambian media as well as Supersport from South Africa and BBC.

Lets utilise the CHAN Competition
by Kambani Lungu

The newly introduced CHAN Competition by CAF which is meant for local players in African leagues should be taken with the seriousness it deserves. The selection of under 23 players for the game against Swaziland is welcome but we must clearly define what we want to achieve out of this competition and not just being mare participants.

I say so because I feel we have a task of overhauling the defence and part of the midfield for the Chipolopolo and since players are supposed to be sourced locally the CHAN Competition should be one of our tools to try out several partnerships before we commence our 2010 campaign. We can then use a few friendlies together with the CASAFA cup to blend the local lads with the professionals.

This is therefore a very serious task and I don't think Peter Kaumba is the right person to handle this and leave Patrick Phiri on holiday.Phiri was at the AFCON and I think he understands our confusion especially in defence so the best was Kaumba to handover his boys to Phiri and let let him continue with building a new under 23 from Lwandamina's lads.I am seeing a problem because according to what is prevailing Billy Mwanza is out of action due to an injury and since I feel the calibre of Nketani and Hachilesa(club less) are supposed to shown the the exit leaving only Joseph Musonda and Chintu Kampamba in the current defence, we really have to find replacements before the 2010 qualifiers.

We can try the back line involving Clive Sichondwe,Willian Chinyama,Francis Kasonde,Hichani Himonde and Nyambe Mulenga and even other possible options for as to have a balanced and complete team.

This is not time to relax, we have a good team and there is abundant talent , we just have to be focused and plan for our 2010 campaign. The tendency of reaping were we did not sow should end,we need to work hard if we are to win trophies in the near future.Whether there are plans to lay off Phiri or not?,he should at the moment be occupied with perfecting the 2008 AFCON squad in readiness for the coming qualifiers.
