&lt;p&gt;The increase of 1.3 percentage points in the annual inflation rate in December 2008 was mainly due to increases in the cost of food and beverages. The increase in the costs of household energy (charcoal and candles), electrical appliances, kitchen and tableware, personal care products and hotel accommodation also contributed to the rise in inflation.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It should be noted that the recent price reductions on fuel and mealie meal that were effected during the latter part of December 2008 have not affected the December Inflation. This is because these price reductions were effected outside the Consumer Price index (CPI) data collection.
